Hua Liu, MD, is an Assistant Professor of Gastroenterology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center. He graduated from Chongqing University for Medical Sciences in 1984, China. His laboratory conducted research in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and ROS induced tissue/organ injury, focusing on the mechanisms of ROS generation and the cellular defense mechanisms against ROS damage. His current researches include insulin sensitivity and metabolic diseases. He is working on a rodent model of metabolic disorders in offspring resulted from prenatal nicotine exposures. Epidemiological studies in human population clearly indicate that smoking during pregnant and lactation is associated with adverse outcomes on fetal development as well as long-term consequences on several organ systems in offspring at later age including metabolic disorders. The long-term goal of the study is to better understand the origins and mechanisms of the developmental disorder and identify epigenetic markers in offspring resulted from maternal tobacco use. The findings could initiate early diagnostic, preventive and therapeutic measures for the children from tobacco-use mothers during pregnancy.
